MODULS

MODUL is a methodology that was born in 2019 with the objective of activating and mobilizing the local population in relation to the care of the environment, culture and education. This methodology translates into a device for active social participation and promoter of citizen culture. During 2019, this methodology began to be tested in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat with a pilot test that led to the Cultural Ecological Center. In 2022 and with a successful pilot test, this methodology is expanded and perfected to prepare the methodology for its replicability.

Thanks to an intersectional perspective, we fulfill the objective of promoting the participation and involvement of very diverse people who are usually subject to different degrees of multivulnerability. These people form the basis of the project by participating and enjoying the activities, as volunteers or in the participation and project management spaces where the strategic and operational aspects of the proposal are decided.

The project was born with the conviction that culture tranforms, generates opportunities, has the capacity to raise awareness and is respectful of the environment in which it operates and can respond to contemporary urban challenges and vulnerable populations.

The MODUL methodology was born with the vocation to activate and mobilize the local population through the generation of trust, transparency, mediation and co-creation. These means make it possible to improve access to culture through strategies of democratization and cultural democracy in neighborhoods with little cohesion, with a large population.

METHODOLOGY

We are committed to placing people at the center of innovation as the main agents of change and generators of proposals. Innovation applied to revalue processes and methodologies, share knowledge and strengthen collective intelligence.

The Cultural Ecological Center is the first implementation of this methodology and is an innovative, consolidated and award-winning project. From this community space, self-managed, horizontal and porous, actions and programs are promoted to face the challenges of the territory. The intercultural community mediation program is the social, relational and participation basis of the space and includes the thickness of the activities and actions of a more sociocultural nature. This program involves entities in the territory in the field of leisure and mental health, public administration and educational centers. These entities participate in the governance of the space.

In the course of developing of the Prat project, we have initiated an extensive participatory process that began with a thorough analysis of the community through interviews, street dynamics, voting, among other methods. Through this process, we will co-design several activities and residences in collaboration with the community, identifying preferences such as the active participation of older people in historical spaces and the predilection of young people for streets and squares.

In 2019, the first test of this methodology began in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat with a pilot that evolves to become the Cultural Ecological Center. In 2022, successfully in the pilot test, this methodology is expanded and refined in order to prepare it for replicability. This replicability begins in 2023, in the Sant Cosme district of El Prat de Llobregat. In the territories where we have applied our methodology we have impacted with short-term impacts in the following way: increase in the number of free and interesting activities for the population of the territory, creation of networks of collaboration and work with local agents and volunteers of the territory.

In addition, at the Cultural Ecological Center there are installed energy saving measures such as solar panels, water collection system, etc. In this territory we begin to see medium/long-term impacts, such as; an increase in the loyalty of new audiences for culture and consolidation of cultural access programs. Also since 2021 there has been a consolidation of work commissions within the device that are organized in a semi-independent way. With the construction of social gardens in the center we will be able to consolidate programs of co-management and “green” volunteering and horticulture, environmental education in educational centers, etc.

MODUL is a methodology that has received several awards annually since its inception. It was awarded in 2020 with the Josep Mª Rueda and Paluenzuela awards from the Barcelona Provincial Council, awards that seek to recognize social intervention projects. These awards recognized the social action and volunteer work involved in the construction of the cultural center’s first building. In 2021 we received the social innovation awards from the La Caixa Foundation for the methodology in design in co-creation format and community self-construction of the Cultural Ecological Center. Finally, in 2022 with the Lluis Carulla awards, which award transformative cultural projects and ideas biennially. In the case of Module, these awards allow us to replicate the project in other territories over two years.
