Contorno Urbano Foundation has been developing socio-cultural projects for many years, focusing on Urban art and sustainable architecture. We believe that we can continue to help in many ways, and one of them is by explaining our working method, how we congeste projects and value our experience.

Ten years of creating and implementing urban creativity projects

Development

We are developing projects in conjunction with the public administration with a high impact capacity in the operational territories. Working with local, national and international entities with projects rooted in the neighbourhood community.

Trust

Work continues in high-complex territories with dozens of local agents, town councils and institutions. Prioritizing neighborhood participation, with transparent selection processes, and results with concrete and palpable improvements for citizens.

Recognition

Winners of the Josep Ma Rueda and Palenzuela awards for social and community action of Barcelona Provincial Council (2020), winners of the state awards for social innovation of the La Caixa Foundation (2021) and winners as best transformative cultural project for the Lluis Carulla Awards (2022).

WORKING METHOD

We believe in the value of culture as an essential driving force in the sustainable development of the next few decades and we call for its role to be a universal right, not a commercial one, not only in the hands of cultural institutions or elites. To generate culture with the person at the center and not as a public or client, but as an integral part of the process of integrating, mediating and generating knowledge that is artistic practice. Taken together, these actions advocate other ways of living together in favour of a new citizens’ culture.

These initiatives and projects are usually promoted from a type of periphery not only geographically, but also culturally and socially. In this context the city is seen as the workplace of a large number of practices that provide relevant, current looks, stress the needs of the territory and coexist with economic constraints to execute them.

It completely vanishes the line separating culture and urbanism and positions themselves as relational spaces capable of generating new centralities in these territories. Finally, the fundamental role of culture in economic, mental and social well-being seems key at a time when crises (economic, social, health, …) are on the way and co-responsibility, democracy and active participation must be the way to enable us to overcome these challenges and emerge strengthened as a society.

PROJECT CO-MANAGMENT

Participation is first and foremost a means, not an end. A way to build in common from our uniqueness, which must be adapted and reconfigured to meet the rhythms and needs of the community.

In this way, we can understand participation as a collective action of a community to improve its ecosystem, understood as the device that encompasses both the territory (the sum of the environment and its human and non-human inhabitants) and the relationships that occur thus (social, political, environmental, economic, etc.) Thus, it must be directed towards creating spaces that allow the configuration of the pro-communum from the crowd to ensure the participation of the maximum number of people of various characteristics, interests and affiliations.

We are committed to putting people at the centre of innovation as the main agents of change and generators of proposals. Innovation applied to reassessing processes and methodologies, sharing knowledge and strengthening collective intelligence.

This is why we have a lot of influence on building new product value chains based on the philosophy Do it with others or DIWO where the co-creation and empowerment of the community as the core of all projects is valued. Along these lines, we believe that innovation lies precisely in the sharing of information and results, in being transparent in processes and in creating spaces that will make us grow as people and as a society. Another recurring principle of the project is based on the idea that the group is smarter than the smarter members of the group. Contemporary culture sees this premise in many of its community-related processes. To acquire knowledge of the digital environment such as collaboration or co-creation and transfer them to the physical world without losing meaning or utility. In this sense, these mechanics allow us to innovate in the democratisation of culture not only as a tool of access, but to create capacities and faculties for its production. The collective possibility of generating proposals that transform society from culture and art.
