50th anniversary Bellvitge neighborhood

Bellvitge is one of the iconic neighborhoods of the city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat known for its fight to stop the construction of more apartment blocks more than 40 years ago. This fight allowed the construction of squares, educational centers or the municipal market where the construction of more houses was planned.

A neighborhood very stigmatized in its beginnings by living mainly immigrants from other autonomous communities of Spain, it has increasingly established itself as one of the best neighborhoods to live in the city thanks to the services it has, its urban planning and transportation public. But this current neighborhood would be impossible to imagine without the struggle of the neighbors to make it possible and on the 50th anniversary of the neighborhood we wanted to pay tribute to the people of the neighborhood.

Objectives and considerations

  • Make a tribute to the neighbors and the unique character of the Bellvitge neighborhood of Hospitalet de Llobregat.
  • The mural would be integrated into the activities of the 50th anniversary of the neighborhood.
  • It is carried out on the exterior wall of the Bellvitge Institute, the only center that offers an artistic high school studies in the city.
  • The students of the educational center will be an integral part in the design and execution of the work as well as the neighborhood association.

For designing the mural, meetings were held with neighbors and neighborhood organizations around the following premise: What characterizes the neighborhood? How would you summarize the neighborhood in one word? And in one sentence? Thus words and phrases of many of the inhabitants of the neighborhood were brought together to compose a phrase that was a real reflection of the neighborhood. The final phrase: BELLVITGE: EFFORT, WELCOMING AND FIGHT. It was jointly voted and decided. Once we had the phrase, the mural was designed and we began the execution of the work first with the students of the center and then in a day open to the neighborhood.
